Many 3D-printing filaments absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Moist filament can cause stringing, surface imperfections, weak layer bonding, and inconsistent extrusion.
Store opened filament in a sealed container with fresh desiccant whenever it is not being used. Vacuum storage bags and dedicated dry-storage boxes are also practical options for longer storage.
Some materials, including nylon and TPU, absorb moisture more quickly than standard PLA. These materials may benefit from being printed directly from a filament dryer or dry box.
Keep spools away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, dust, and humid rooms. Labeling each spool with its material type and opening date can also make storage easier to manage.
Good filament storage does not require a complicated setup. A sealed environment, working desiccant, and basic organization can significantly improve print consistency.
